The Duchess is Born http://babalootruck.com/2010/08/the-duschess/ http://babalootruck.com/2010/08/the-duschess/#comments Fri, 13 Aug 2010 07:30:00 +0000 Brian Sadler http://babalootruck.com/?p=322 ... →]]>

The duchess is our 1986 Chevy truck. She’s had many incarnations, to be sure, but I’ve got that deep down feeling, that this is her best. She’s never been a Latin lady before, but it sure feels like it. I briefly named her “Amazon” because she’s big and bad-ass. But once her makeover was complete, that rumba dance scene painted on her ‘big side’ makes her look like she’s dancing herself. It made me think of my mom–forever in her spiked-heels, big hoop earrings and colorful dresses–who never stops shakin’ her hips.  When I remembered mom’s childhood nickname, “La Duques,” I laughed and thought, Who better to bring some spicy Cuban flavor to our Peninsula part of the world than “The Duchess”?

Photo shoots sound way more exciting than they really are. It’s a long, tedious process which requires all of your patience, micro-attention to detail and endurance.  I was lucky enough to spend the day watching two very talented young women make Babaloo’s food come to life for the camera.  (Yeah, I tried to help, but was actually in the way.  I’m told this is normal.)  The frames that were finally selected made the drive down from Monterey to Los Angeles more than worth it.  See for yourself.  They look good enough to eat!

The Duchess's New Clothes http://babalootruck.com/2010/05/the-duchess/ http://babalootruck.com/2010/05/the-duchess/#comments Sat, 15 May 2010 08:59:09 +0000 Brian Sadler http://babalootruck.com/?p=121 ... →]]> The Duchess’s New Clothes

The Duchess can shake her thing, can’t she?  It’s like she’s dancing even when sitting in Park.  She’s been all dolled up with a grandiose, rumba-themed explosion of a mural by Justin Winter, the utterly mad street artist out of New Orleans. He arrived in San Francisco with such a blast of energy, I thought maybe he’d paint my house, too. As we headed past Carmel-by-the-Sea toward the Babaloo truck site, Justin insisted on swinging a U-turn and pulling to the side.  Hell-bent on thanking his gods with a baptism-like ritual in the icy Pacific waters, he stripped down and dove in.  That’s how things started the week.  The Duchess got her wild new look:  one bare truck and one naked painter.
